There are numerous resources available to help start your business. Many of these resources are local in nature, so you will have to do some digging.

First, start with the these online resources:
Once you have an idea, look up local agencies that can help you the rest of the way:
  • SBDC - Small business Development Center
  • SCORE - Local office of SCORE
  • Local Business Incubators (for example, NYS has over 34 business incubators)
  • Chambers of Commerce
  • Other Business Associations
There is no way that any online list of resources can thoroughly cover ever possible source of small business startup assisitance for every locality. But, the links above are a good starting point. Then I would do a Google search for "<State Name> Small Business" and see what comes up. When I do that search for NY, the very first link is http://www.nylovessmallbiz.com. This is a great source of NY specific information and just about every state has a similar site.

If you are having troble finding information pertaining to your state or local area, feel free to post here and see if we can help you find some resources.

I'm looking for information about operating in the area of European Union when you are from an EU country. Especially legal issues, internet based business and how contracts made through online works.

I would also like some information about operationg in US from EU (taxes, legal issues, possible problems, etc).

Good list of resources.  I have always found the Chamber of Commerce to be a decent source of programs and information for small businesses in the past.  As I mentioned elsewhere, I am ramping up on a shoestirng, and have not really given thought to some of that.

With working from home and having my business entirely online sometimes it does not cross your mind to make use of more traditional business resources.

Thanks for the tip on the ideacafe.  I had never heard of them but will definately try to remember to take a deeper look at it.  So much to do and so little time. :)

You might also check with your town council for any suggestions they may have on the type of clientele you could expect.  This would give you an idea of what you're dealing with in the way of clients or patrons.

Thanks for this great list. It has alot of helpful links in it. I have been to SBA and SCORE before, but I had never even heard of some of the others. I looked at all of these sites and they have lots of useful info. Thanks again!
