Just wanted to discuss there about the opportunity on making money by blogging.
Here's an article about that, taken from http://www.prweb.com/releases/2005/11/prweb313180.htm
More Bloggers are Quitting Their Jobs and Blogging Full-Time
In the past year bloggers have been quitting their jobs to blog full-time. Eric Reynolds from Springfield Missouri is one such blogger. Creator of Subnixus.com, he documents his journey from a nine to five job to blogging full-time.
Springfield, Mo. (PRWEB) November 22, 2005 – Over the past year, 26 year old Eric Reynolds has become a full-time blogger. He now makes enough money blogging that he is considering quitting his job with Expedia Inc. and living off of only his blog profits.
“A few months ago I realized that I was almost making as much money from my blog as I was from my real job. That's when I decided to start http://www.subnixus.com and document the journey from my nine to five job to living off of only my blog.” he said.
Since starting his site two months ago, it has quickly become one of the premiere on-line stops for bloggers wanting to learn how to make money from their own blogs. By sharing the tips he has learned over the past few years, he has been able to help hundreds of bloggers get started along the same path. However, he is quick to point out that a full-time blogger needs more than just a blog.
“Some people think that having a blog is all you need, but that couldn't be further from the truth. You have to provide something that readers can't find anywhere else. In essence you are quite literally selling yourself. Good writing skills and unique content are essential things to have in a successful blog.” he said.
Do you believe in it? Would you do the same thing?

| Interesting article....but I'm not sure I would jump ship for a full time blogging job. I'd be worried about blogging being a fad and losing revenue when the fad dies down.

ALthough some people are making 6-figures blogging -- I don't think I could personally do it. I just don't have that much committment and to be honest probably not that much ideas or things to talk about in different subjects to keep things going.
I guess my reasoning is a little bias --- I truly believe the only way to make money in blogging is by owning the blog network -- I personally own a blog hosting company in a niche market which over time will pay very well.
I am not a fan of Google adsense or other pay per click ads that are remotely hosted -- I believe one could make way more money with an in house solution.

Yeah I agree with you. Its definitely possible, but its hard to do without the right niche and a lot of time. I doubt there are any really casual bloggers out there making six figures but if you have knowledge on a certain topic that isnt already saturated with popular blogs it could be done. I'd be up for running a blog if I thought I could put out the best blog in a given field. Still looking for my niche though.

I do not understand the whole blogging thing myself. I think other forms of communications are better on the web. I think for two-way communications of a large group of people forums are much more useful for exchanging information than blogging.
I just think blogging has gotten its own momentum with people writing their own blogs and reading other people's blogs that it is just a big pool of people sustaining itself.
I have find some blog software to work very well as a content management system for information targeted at non-bloggers. I don't particular want to target my information or products at every web publisher out there. And honestly, such a huge percentage of blogs are not worth the ether they are written on it is scary.

I think blogging may be just a fad right now. This isn't something I personally would want to pursue for a full time business or anything. But for those who are making very good incomes form blogging, I think that's great.

I dont really think that blogs will be a quick fad. I will admit that the fact that everyone and their mom has a crappy blog out their takes away from their integrity as a whole. But blogs that provide high quality information frequently will be around for a long time.
Blogging and forums serve different purposes really. Blogs are really show one person or groups view on a subject, whereas forums are just for discussion. With a blog the information is more permanent and often more informative than normal forum discussions.

I agree that they serve different purposes, but I think that when the blogging dust settles, we will see a few stand-along blogs while most others are informational, but associated with a service or product.
A perfect example is the Microsoft Community. There are several blogs run by Microsoft staff for specific products. They are updated with news and information, as well as tips and recent issues reported to Microsoft. I believe this is a great way to use a blog.

Yeah, I agree. Corporate blogs are a great way for companies to communicate with customers and the public in general. Doesnt seem fair that big companies are some of the only groups that are having really big success with blogs though. The money they're bringing in from their blogs is just peanuts compared to what the company already makes.

I agree with TPT for the most part. There is a hyper-fad in blogging right now where people just dump their every thought onto the web. The reality is most people are not very capable writers, and are not going to be able to do much with their blog.
I think as things progress a "blog" is just another tool to a web publisher to deliver information to visitors. Sure you will still have personal blogs, but as you see with most of them, they are short-lived. Lots of people have owned diaries in their lives, how many have actually kept writing in them? Only a miniscule fraction.
I too think "blogs" will mostly be found in association with other mechanisms. Although as I mentioned elsewhere I have found some blogging software to be very good at setting up and distributing information, even in a non-blogging way.

| How do bloggers make money from their sites? Do they make money from people buying advertising on their sites? I wsa just wondering how they can make enough money to quit their jobs.

Direct selling of advertising / blog sponsorships is big business these days, and if your blog is popular enough you can make quite a bit from it.
I agree its a scary prospect getting into something as 'faddish' as blogging though.
