Hey guys,
Im interested in what businesses the members here run. I have only run websites and all have been content sites trying to bring in money through advertising with programs such as google adsense. I have had moderate sucess with some sites but at the moment I am only running one forum that is not doing very well. I don't have many interesting businesses to tell you guys about but I'm interested in what you guys have started in the past or are running now.

CaitSith,
I run an IT Consulting company focusing on the Small Business market in my region. My business was started 3 years ago and is still growing. I also run a web hosting company that is focused and marketed to regional small businesses, mostly as a value add product to my other small business services.
In my spare time, I have developed a couple of web sites and I have bought and sold a few domain names.
This is my first business...before that I was working in the dotCom IT world.

Sounds like your doing pretty well for youself. Keep up the good work.
I considered starting a web hosting company, but I read about it and they say support makes it basically a full time job. How much time are you putting into it?

Thanks!
It doesn't take too much time for me...mostly because I focus on local businesses, so the majority of issues arise during normal business hours. I also do not provide basic no-frills hosting...instead I only offer a site builder and provide flash animated support files to keep the call volume down. Most of my hosting customers, I have dealt with face-to-face, so there's more than just a casual business relationship there.
It's almost like a niche...just based on location rather than type of business.
Also, I purchase space from a company that caters to resellers only and has been very reliable. That is probably the best thing...as long as the servers are up and email works, I get very few calls.

The core of my business is web publishing. I started with 1 hobby site but got the fever and saw the potential very quickly. I now have about 12 active sites with about 30 more in the works and ideas for probably 300 more beyond that.
It is a full-time obsession for me. I first started with adsense, but if I look at my revenue for December to-date Adsense makes up less than 10% of my total revenue. Diversify your income streams and your base and your business will be less susceptible to volatility or problems if a single site has a problem.

My business involves a great deal of writing services at the moment: article writing, website content and so forth. I also write business and marketing plans. Most of my work is done online. Although I do sometimes do consultations to help people in my area who are starting or planning to start a new business. We come up with marketing strategies, business names and so forth.

Yeah, you sound a lot like me, except more successful. I have tons of ideas that I am fairly confident could take off, but I have neither the time nor the resources to follow through with most of it. I dont know how to code and Im not much of a designer, so I think I am going to start working on this, so when I find an idea I like a lot I can develop it myself rather than paying others.
