I do not have a need for credit card merchant account in my currnet business, at least not yet.  A long time ago I had one with a different business and we had some issues with chargebacks.  It was not excessive, it was just our procedures for handling them were a bit flawed and caused some contention with the credit card processor.  At one point I was even told I was going to be put on a blacklist and never be able to get another credit card merchant account again.  We sold the business to another entity at the time and that was part of the issue.  Regardless, I believe we met all of our obligations with the merchant processor and we did not end our relationship with them owing them any money.

My question is has anyone ever heard of some kind of black list?  And beyond that gloomy question :) do you use a merchant processor, and if so, who do you use and how have you liked their service?

I have not heard of any CC processor blacklist, but I don't doubt that it may exist!

I was using a credit card processor for a while, but the volume of CC transaction was low, so I cancelled. The CC processor I used was CDG Commerce. I had no serious complaints about them.

If your business is online and you need CC processing services, I recommend that you sign up for fraudcall or one of the other automated voice verification systems. They can really reduce the chances of chargebacks. Basically, they plug into your application and run at the point between when you get the CC info and before the transaction is submitted. FraudCall verifies the credit card with the address, verifies that the caller is within the region where the CC address is listed (checked by IP address location) and performs a callback to the number on record with the CC company to verify the transaction. If everything checks ok, it allows the transaction to go through. If anything fails, it will return a code and you can further manually check the transaction.

hummm..interesting --- I personally never heard of a blacklist, where you would be banned from getting another merchant account.

I personally have never needed the use of a "real" merchant account -- I have always had great success with Paypal. However, it never fully integrated with my website -- which was kinda of a pain.

I know in the USA Paypal has a merchant account program that integrates into the looka nd feel of your website --- which I personally feel is awesome! Anyone, who is in the USA looking for a easy to use and understand merchant account system I recommend Paypal's new Merchant system.

you can check out the specs here:

TPT,

That is very interesting about fraudcall.  I had never heard of a service like that.  Something to definately keep in mind if I progress back down that road.  Sounds like it would be very good in terms of combating fraud and fighting charge backs.

M0nk,

I actual fell into my Paypal business account when I realized it was actually able to be used as a merchant account.  With a small monthly fee you can even use it just like a merchant gateway and integrate it with shopping carts etc.  You can also get a virtual terminal for taking orders in person or over the phone.  Their rates seem fairly decent too. They are not super high and they are very simple.  One of my biggest problems were the crazy changing rate structures previous merchant accounts had.  Best thing is you get the same fees for Amex as you do for everything else.

I have never heard of any kind of blacklist either. I use paypal too, and so far it has been sufficient for my needs.
