Many companies are advertising guaranteed search engine placement. Don't trust the hype! There are no guarantees and some of the tactics used by such companies may actually get you blacklisted.
But, there are a few low-cost things you can do to help get listed:
- Use HTML keywords
- Make sure your content contains the keywords. Many SEO experts believe that having your keyword appear 5 to 7 times within the page content will increase your ranking.
- Do not try to trick the search engines! For example, text and background of the same color (making hidden text) is believed to reduce ranking.
- Go to DMOZ.org, find the appropriate category, then "suggest URL". DMOZ is a manual index where people actually look at your site, verify content and approve the listing. It may take a few weeks, but it's well worth it.
- Submit your site to Google for free: http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl
- Use your web site link in your signature whenever you can. Many forums allow signatures, so participate in forums and your link will be seem by the search engine spiders as well as potential customers. (Double Benefit!)
I know there are many other SEO tips, but these are the basics that can get you started. Keep in mind that the algorithms used by the search engines are a closely held secret and change from time to time. So, Search Engine Optimization requires an ability to stay on top of the latest changes.

I agree that there is no need to resort to tricks, and don't trust anyone who guarantees you placement.
Link building is also good. One thing I would suggest as well is trying to understand your niche as much as possible and work on integrating your site within the already established community. The more traffic you can get from outside the search engines, the more restful nights you will have.

Good point about hitting other sites in your niche!
I have used link building with this site. If you have the Google toolbar installed, you will see that intensify.biz has a PageRank of 5, after being in full operation for less than 2 months so far. This site is also being spidered heavily by Google, over 4000 hits in 3 weeks.
What did I do to build this site:
- Regular content updates with the business articles.
- Purchased some low cost advertising links on high-PR sites. I recommend looking at the advertising sections of webhostingtalk.com to find some good deals.
- Use links in my signature on some of the forums I frequent.
- Minimal Google adwords to get the site seen by regular users and not just search engine spiders.
All of this helps the search engines find your site and with proper keywords and ever updating content, you will see the results.
There are other higher-cost ways of getting advertising, but I built this site for personal enjoyment and to be a general resource, not as a full fledged business. So, I would just be happy with breaking even on the costs of running intensify.biz.

Thanks for the tip on webhostingworld and buying links. I have never paid for a link yet, but realize as I grow it makes more sense as it accomplishes much more in terms of value than other methods that I tend to brute force now.
Some good tips there. Sometimes link-building can be frustrating, so seeing some more shortcuts is always helpful.

You're welcome!
Buying (or trading for) links on site with high pagerank will get you listed on the search engines quicker. This is especially true if the sites have many high PR pages. If you shop around and choose wisely, you can get some really great deals. I've found that several site owners who sell advertising on webhostingtalk are willing to deal if you want to make multi-month or multi-link purchases.

I've heard that it can take quite a while to get listed on DMOZ, but are they very selective of which links they put up. Does it just take a while to get on because of the huge volume of sites submitted and the manual reviewing process or is site quality a factor as well. Obviously the site can't be god awful but will the average forum or website be listed?

DMOZ is completely manual and handled by volunteers. Each category has it's own reviewer, so how long it takes to get listed on DMOZ is really up in the air. I've had sites get listed in under 2 weeks and others that take over 2 months, with a couple never getting listed.
The way I see it, it only takes 2 minutes to submit a listing on DMOZ. So, even if it doesn't get listed, it's not a real loss of time, but if it does get listed, then you have a great backlink since DMOZ is spidered so thouroughly and feeds some of the other search engines.

Yeah, its definitely an amazing resource for upping your PR and SE rankings. I havent submitted anything yet, but Im definitely going to with a few new projects I have up my sleeves. One more question though, if I submitt and it doesnt get listed at all, can I re-submit or will the site not allow it. Obviously I mean after a period of like 4 months or something so I can be sure its not just on a waiting list or something.

There are numerous things that you can do to make your site listed so there is no need to do all those black hat tricks to get listed. What I usually do is link building and some in page optimization.
