What is best? I think you should manually submit to the search engines you find most important. There are a lot of search engines, but only a select few that most people use the most often. Google and Yahoo are, of course, two very important SE's.
There is really no need to pay to have your website submitted to "1,000's" of serach engines.

I agree! I personally only do manualy sumissions to Yahoo, google, and DMOZ. If there is a well known site for the respective industry, I will also try to get it listed there.
The other search engines are not as popular and some are very fishy. Once you get listed by one of the big sites, the smaller search engines will pick them up with their spiders anyway...it may just take a bit longer.

I used to submit to the search engines. Now I do not bother. The only ones I am interested in are yahoo!, msn and google and all of those pick up quickly with links from other places.
The other search engines will find their way eventually and they do not deliver any real traffic so I don't even bother.
I will submit most of my sites to DMOZ right away and then sit back and hope they get added.

I agree. Manual submission is still the best. You will have a better chance of link from sites that are worth.
